Sudirman Statue

Jalan Jend Sudirman

About

Located in the median strip of Jakarta's main thoroughfare, and just south of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, stands a 6.5 meter-high statue of Indonesia's independence hero General Sudirman (1916-1950). Revered for his bravery in resisting colonial occupation, General Sudirman died not long after his country declared independence in 1945 as a result of poor health. He was only 35. Nearly all of Indonesia's cities and large towns have a street named after him. On either side of the busy road where the statue is located are many skyscrapers. They are home to all sorts of businesses including banks and top-quality restaurants as well as international hotels and luxurious apartments.
