The Baptistery

About

The grand Romanesque round building, Baptistery has an eight-sided pyramidal dome. In 1152, Diotisalvi began the construction. The Baptistery is in white marble; however, parts of the pyramidal dome have red bricks and part parts of it are covered in white lead leaf. The top of the dome features another smaller dome with the statue of St. John the Baptist, made of bronze. The Baptismal Font is at the center of the building, where Galileo Galilei was baptized. The Pulpit was sculpted between 1255 and 1260 by Nicola Pisano. Episodes of Jesus' life and the Universal Judgment are represented in the six main panels.
