If you want to go native, Friendly House is the ticket. The menus are in Bulgarian only and none of the staff speaks English. However, it's worth getting out of your comfort zone for a casual meal at this inside/umbrella table restaurant on Ruse's Liberation Square opposite the Liberty statue. You also can make a pretty accurate choice from the illustrated menu, which features lots of salads and several pork and chicken dishes: Everything is pictured in living color. Beware: The menu is inexplicably peppered with racy photos of beautiful women.
