About

The O'Connell Heritage Summer School will consist of a series of lectures on the historical aspects of O'Connell's career as well as his relevance for modern Ireland. On the first day, it will take place in the Library, Cahersiveen, near where O'Connell was born in 1775. On Saturday, it will reconvene in what was O'Connell's own home, Derrynane House. The Academic Director of the School is Cahersiveen-born Professor Maurice Bric, a professor of history in University College Dublin. The overall purpose of the School will be to look at various aspects of the historical career of Daniel O'Connell as well as to consider the challenges which they can pose for the direction of modern Ireland. The School will present these themes in five discrete sessions. Each session will have two speakers, one of whom will address the relevant theme in the historical setting of the career of Daniel O'Connell. The second will relate the theme to the challenges and circumstances of contemporary Ireland.2014 dates to be confirmed.
