This is the statue of a Goan Roman Catholic monk named as Abbe Faria, who was one of the pioneers of scientific study of hypnotism. In the statue he is shown as hypnotizing a woman. Abbe Faria was a renowned priest, scientist and a revolutionary who participated in the French revolution and also fought against the British and Portuguese occupation in India. He is professed to be the originator of several techniques on hypnotism. During 19th century Abbe Faria introduced many skills based on oriental hypnosis in Paris.
