About

Tiger Hill Cemetery, situated in Coonoor, is a 19th century graveyard, primarily used by the British for their war burials. Situated amidst a tea plantation, this graveyard has burials dating back to the early 1900s. At the entrance of the cemetery there is a stone gate with an arched gateway and a steeple. The memorials are simple, some with ornate designs, sculptures and beautifully written epitaphs. Though most of the tombs in the cemetery belong to the officers of the British East India Company and members of their families, there are a few burials belonging to the locals as well. An interesting place for history buffs, this place also sees a lot of visitors from abroad who come here to find their ancestors burial sites and trace their family roots. One has to take prior permission to visit the Tiger Hill Cemetery. A record book present at the cemetery shows all details of the burials at this site. The cemetery is quiet and calm and is also known for its huge fir trees. One can also visit Sim's Park or take a leisure walk through some of the tea estates nearby.
