A visit to the Top End would not be complete without a trip to the Tiwi Islands - Melville and Bathurst. Take the short trip from Darwin to Bathurst Island to experience life in a modern-day Aboriginal community - learn about the rich and fascinating history and culture of the Tiwi people and perhaps take the opportunity to purchase examples of the unique Tiwi Island arts and crafts. The museum is home to displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi Dreamtime stories. You can purchase fine Tiwi traditional art at Island prices in the Tiwi art centers. A great moment of of the day is meeting the Tiwi ladies and enjoying billy tea and damper. Discover the traditional tiwi totem dances and a smoking ceremony and learn of the traditional meaning behind them. If weather conditions permit, you will also have the opportunity to visit a local waterhole for a swim. We will also have the opportunity to visit a Tiwi burial site and hear of the ancestral rituals associated with the Pukamani burial poles.
