Uyo is a city in south-eastern Nigeria and is the capital of Akwa Ibom State, a major oil producing state of Nigeria. The city became a capital of Akwa Ibom State on September 23, 1987 following the creation of Akwa Ibom State from Cross River State. The city is site of the University of Uyo. The population is estimated to be about 451,128 while the greater Uyo Metropolitan Area is over 500,000 thousand. The city can be accessed by road and by air via the Uyo Airport also known as Akwa Ibom International Airport or AKIA Uyo is a fast growing City as the city can boast of some massive infrastructural growth in the past nine years. It has an intensive network of dual carriage roads such as the Nsikak Eduok Avenue currently the widest road in the Uyo metropolis. It is an eight lane Super Highway bordered with carpet grasses, flowers, trees, Traffic Lights and Street Lights. Currently some flyovers are under construction in the city to ease traffic. The major roads into the city are Oron Road/Airport Road, Abak Road, Nwaniba Road, Itu Road, Ikot Ekpene Road and Aka Road. While the major roads within the city are Nsikak Eduok Avenue, Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Atiku Abubakar Avenue, Wellington Bassey Way, IBB Way, Udo Umana Avenue, Idoro Road and Udo Udoma Avenue. he city also boast of public recreational areas such as the Ibom Connection, the prestigious Le Meridien Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort which is still under construction and when completed will be the largest hotel in the west African region. The State has other recreational projects under construction such as the Ibom Tropicana Resort to boost the tourism potential of the state. This resort will include a 16 storey building 5 star hotel, a dome, a cinemaplex, shopping area, themes, water parks and other recreational facilities. It will be the first of its kind in West Africa. The 16 storey hotel when completed will be the tallest hotel in Nigeria after which notable world class hotels such as Le Meridien, Protea, Sheraton Hotels, Hilton, Intercontinental Hotels and Marriott will inspect the facilities and one of these hotels will eventually manage the landmark (hotel). The city also has a Museum.
