A world away from the hustle and bustle of central Rio, Vargem Grande is the place to come if you want to escape the summer swelter. Around 40 kilometers west of the touristy Zona Sul, this wonderfully rural neighborhood is an ideal base for exploring the Serra Carioca mountain range. Trails through the forest can be followed on horseback or on foot, and lead through fruit groves and past waterfalls. It's good to build up an appetite here as the area has become famous for its cluster of excellent restaurants, known collectively as the 'Centro Gastronomico'. - Lucy Bryson
