Istanbul is full of crowd-pleasers, and Gelik is one (or should I say two: there's a Gelik for fish and one for meat on opposite sides of the highway). More of an empire, Gelik enjoys a loyal following of fans, offering something for everyone, including the little ones, with outdoor picnic areas and playgrounds. Indoors is an expansive and regal chalet-style restaurant. The freshest selections of fish are displayed at the entryway of Gelik Balik; choose your poison and tell the waiter how you want yours cooked. Most choose grilled, but they also do a mean fish güveç -- a casserole prepared in a terra-cotta dish by the same name. Gelik offers a daunting selection of appetizers, including balik öfte (fish balls) and cured fish "pastrami." Fish is not cheap, so don't expect a bargain here.
