If you're a map buff, simply have to have a detailed map of where you're going, are looking for a gift or something to frame when you get home that goes further than the typical tourist souvenirs, consider coming to the Instituto Geografico Militar to check out their enormous selection of detailed maps. Ther are good street-level maps of Santiago, and hugely detailed topograhicpical maps of almost every section of Chile. There are a few maps that are considered sensitive, along the Chile-Argentina border, which are not available to teh public, for but the most part, if you can dream of visiting it, you can get a good map of it here. The people that work here are extremely knowlegeable and they should have all maps in stock. Even if you weren't planning on picking up any maps, it's still an interesting place to visit to peruse some of the stock.
