About four kilometres out of Howick one would find this beautiful dam on the Umgeni river, surrounded by a nature reserve which stocks the elusive red hartebeest, blesbok. springbok, oribi and zebra. A variety of other activities such as: yatching, wind-surfing, canoeing, cycling and fresh water fishing are offered. Midmar nature reserve also hosts The Midmar Mile annually and it is one of the largest open water swimming events in the world.
