MUSEO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE IBIZA Y FORMENTERA-SEDE PUIG DES MOLINS MUSEUMS DESCRIPTION The Archaeological Museum of Ibiza has two centres, one in Dalt Vila and another at Puig des Molins necropolis, both of which are offering all visitors an invitation to take a “journey into death in ancient Ibiza”. This metaphorical pathway leads them to meet Ibiza inhabitants who died many centuries ago. The experience immerses visitors in the minds of the communities who lived on the island of Ibiza long ago, giving them an insight into the way people understood death, as well as their beliefs, fears and hopes for the afterlife and the funeral rites that arose from these practices. In fact, this journey not only provides knowledge about the past, it can also lead to self-reflection and a better understanding of the present.   At the close of the 7th century B.C. the Phoenicians established themselves at Puig de Vila and the surrounding area and founded a settlement on the bay of Ibiza which constituted the original core of the city. It was in this period that the lower part of the Puig des Molins began to be used as a necropolis and reached an extension of 10.000 m2. At the Monographic Puig des Molins Museum the exhibition is organized over five salons and which covers the entire period of use of the necropolis. Salon I is dedicated to the question of death in the Phoenician period between the years 626 to 525 B.C. and covers the funeral rites of the era, the burials and possible cenotaphs. Salon II focuses on Punic funeral rites between 525 and 25 B.C. In 525 B.C., the Punic era on the island of Ibiza began. This culture is extraordinarily dedicated to the concept of the funeral and the associated rites from the preparation of the body and the funerals linked with burial to the after death cults. Salon III demonstrates the evolution of Punic burials on Ibiza during the most ancient period (525 - 425 B.C.), the classic period (425 - 300 B.C.), the period of greatest splendour, and the late period (300 - 25 B.C.). Salon IV describes Roman funeral rituals on Ibiza from the early imperial period (25 B.C.) until the end of late-Antiquity (700 A.D.). Salon V: the Sainz de la Cuesta Colection. The bulk of the collection comprises of the items acquired in 1945 by Rafael Sainz de la Cuesta (Madrid, 1896 - 1961) from the heirs of Joan Roman Calbet, the director and sponsor of the Ebusitan Archeological Society. The collection - a compendium of all of the Punic-roman archeology on the island of Ibiza -, can be enjoyed thanks to the donations from the heirs of Sainz de la Cuesta made to the state in 1965 with the express wish that it be displayed in this city.
