About

The beautiful fishing village of Dunmore East is situated 17km South of Waterford city. South Coast Sailing is based at Waterford Harbour Sailing club on the west pier of Dunmore East harbour. You can join a group or come along as a group of up to six people. The day of your cruise will begin by meeting the skipper and crew at the Waterford Harbour Sailing club house at the designated time of your booking and taking care of registration details and a short safety briefing and weather forecast over a cup of coffee on the deck looking over Dunmore East bay. Your cruise also entitles you to membership of Waterford Harbour Sailing club for the day of your booking and you have full use of all the club house facilities such as showers, bar and food and the club premises including the stunning deck and its panaramic views. After the club house briefing you will board "Riptide", our vessel for your cruise. She is a classic cruiser / racing yacht 10.10m long, German built, Dehler DB1, manufactured in 1981. She is a monohul sailing yacht with a Bermudan sloop fractional rig and finn keel. She weighs 4.5 tonne and draws 1.9m. Her sails are set on a single, 16m high aluminium mast holding a 5m long boom and supported with wire rigging and 3 sets of straight, in line spreaders and spectra runners and checkstayes. When built in 1981, her design was seen as years ahead of its time. Even now ,30 years on, she can be challanging boat to sail in heavy weather and is still very competitive while racing in her IRC class.Your 3 hour cruise will take you around Waterford Estuary and depending on the prevailing wind direction and the groups expectations of the day, we will be visiting areas such as the Saltee islands, Kilmore Quay, The Hook lighthouse and both the Wexford and Waterford coast lines. You decide how laid back or how involved and exciting your cruise will be. You can spend your time on Riptide just chilling out and taking in the spectacular scenery from the unique perspective of the timeless experience of a yacht under sail or you can get involved in working the boat and learning the magic of sail power. If, after your cruise, you would like to learn more about the art of sailing, you can organise further, more structured lessons with us. When your cruise is complete and we return to Dunmore East Harbour, you can continue to soak up the ambience of the day with a relaxing lunch and bottle of wine or an evening pint in the amazing surroundings of the clubhouse. We would be delighted to hear your thoughts and ideas over an evening pint on how your cruise went and how interested you find your new found sailing skills. Our aim throughout the day is to keep you safe and open your eyes to the beauty and magic of yacht sailing around the South East coast of Ireland.
