Sternbräu

Griesgasse 23 Cuisines: European

About

The entrance to this establishment is through an arched cobblestone passageway leading off a street in the Old Town. The place seems big enough to have fed half the Austro-Hungarian army, with a series of eight rooms in varying degrees of formality. The Hofbräustübl is a rustic fantasy combining masonry columns with hand-hewn beams and wood paneling. Other rooms have such accessories as sea-green tile stoves, marble columns, and oil paintings. You can also eat in the chestnut tree-shaded beer garden, which is usually packed on summer nights, or under the weathered arcades of an inner courtyard. Drinks are served in the restaurant's bar, Grünstern. Daily specials include typically Austrian dishes such as Wiener and chicken schnitzels, trout, cold marinated herring, Hungarian goulash, hearty regional soups, and many other solid selections. Come here for the filling portions -- not for refined cuisine.
