About

Open since 1905, this is easily my favorite lunch place in Alexandria, with high ceilings and gleaming old paneling. Though it is licensed to serve alcohol, the old bar in the corner seems to be used mostly for blending excellent fresh juices. In recent years, management has managed to modernize, adding wireless Internet access and a breakfast menu, without losing any of its original charm. For lunch, start with the creamy chicken or tomato soup, and then move on to one of the sandwiches; my favorite is the thick toasted club, stacked with roast beef, chicken, and cheese, but the smoked salmon with capers shouldn't be ignored, nor should the pizzas. Finish with a sampling of the pastries from the picturesque bakery outlet on the opposite side of the building. Service is sedate, and lunch will proceed at a dignified pace.
