The House at the Two Cats | The area of the future Coal market (Uhelný trh) used to be a part of a village named Újezd of St. Martin with a little church of the same name. When the Old Town fortifications were built in 1234, part of the village together with the church, now called St. Martin in the Wall, was included in the fortification. Only later a charcoal market was established here, and charcoal was sold here until the beginning of the 19th century. This Old Town house was originally a Gothic residence house with a roof pavilion. The oldest reference dates back to the mid-14th century. In 1407 it was owned by Jakub of Hradec, and at this time the house emblem of a hand was recorded, which gave the house the name At the hand or At the hands for a long time. It was also named by its owners, U Kropáčů or later U Trnků. Today’s appearance is from Baroque era, from a reconstruction after the fire around 1678. The facade is Classicist from the first quarter of the 19th century. The two-storied house has three vaults above an arcade, it is covered by a low hipped pantile roof in which there are three dormers. A tower shaped as a pavilion rises above the middle of the roof, with a great room inside, used as a studio. The garden house resembles those designed often by architect Jean Baptiste Mathey. The last great modern reconstruction took place in 1941 with participation of architect František Krásný. At that time, the passage way into the yard was abolished and the yard wing was pulled down. In 1726 the house was first marked as a tap-room, and the house emblem of two cats only appeared on the facade in the beginning of the 20th century, thus giving name not only to the popular pub, but also to the entire house.
