About

The House U Schnellů | On the corner of Tomášská and Letenská Street, in a place where they both end at the square Malostranské náměstí, there is an old two-storied house with a simple facade. This place was always owned by the church, namely the Augustinian Monastery of St. Thomas. There used to be a Gothic object here, which later got Renaissance additions, and was named At the Golden Stork. The name was changed to today’s u Schnellů only after 1787, when the house was purchased by the merchant Tomáš Schnell. He carried out some building modifications, and in 1811 he realized a major reconstruction of two Renaissance houses according to a project of the royal builder Josef Zobel. He increased the Renaissance houses by the third storey and gave the house its present Classicist front. The Southern portal, lined by processed stone, was preserved from the original Renaissance building. Tomáš Schnell and his descendants ran a pub here with the right to brew beer until the second half of the 19th century, when the small breweries got a successful competitor in the Pilsen’s Prazdroj. Ondřej Schnell’s son extended the offer by vintage wines. There is a renowned Old-Prague restaurant in the house, which has been here for a very long time. There is a taproom on the right - a lounge with ancient vaults, and there are three pub rooms on the opposite side. Many significant personalities used to be very frequent guests here, such as poet Jan Neruda, painter Mikoláš Aleš, writers Jakub Arbes, Ignát Herrmann, Antonín Klášterský, Jaroslav Hašek, actors Eduard Vojan, Jaroslav Vojta, Jiřina Šejbalová or Bohuš Záhorský, art historian V. V. Štech, or composer Rudolf Friml.
