About

Valdek | A massive seven-storey building situated in the place where Anglická and Jugoslávská Streets converge at the Náměstí Míru Square was built between the years 1928 and 1929. It was built at the site of the Neo-Renaissance building of the same name by František Novotný, a father of its last owner. The name of the building is probably derived from German “Wald Ecke” meaning a forest nook that once might have been there.Although the house was in good condition, the last owner decided to rebuild it, therefore she let the old one demolish and had a new Valdek built in style of Decorative Functionalism, according to a design by architect Bohumil Bellada. Its reinforced concrete structure was designed by Ing. Jaroslav Wimmer. The house stands in the area of 806 square metres, the reinforced concrete structure is filled with bricks and building blocks. The top floor recedes from the façade of about 2,5 m creating beautiful terraces along the entire façade. The roof is flat, covered with metal sheet. The house was originally built as a department store. Later the comfort business apartments, surgeries and offices were established there; on the ground floor there was a famous buffet. There were two basements in the house, in one of which a cinema with 722 seats was set up. The operation of the Valdek Cinema launched in 1930, after the Second World War it was renamed as the Varšava Cinema (Warsaw). Two sculptures of giant Atlases by sculptor František Hergesel junior were placed in the cinema interior. They once supported a portal of the previous, demolished house. Nothing else has been preserved out of it. A passage on the ground floor that connects Anglická and Jugoslávská Streets serves up to this day. On the mezzanine floor there was a large popular café with a view of all three sides, later a dance café with music; in the attic there were mostly studios. In 1993 the general reconstruction of the house started according to the project architect Lukas and lasted until 1995. The café, buffet or cinema were not re-established, at present there is a bank branch.
