Virupaksha Temple, one of the popular temples of the region, was built between 733 and 745 AD by Lokamahadevi, queen of Vikaramaditya II. Often known as Shri Lokeswara-Maha-Sila-prasada or Lokeshwara, the name of the temple is derived from the name of the queen, who constructed it.The interior walls, pillars and ceilings of this temple are decorated with elaborate carvings and bas relief figures of animals and humans. Apart from this, the temple also has numerous sculptures of Nataraja, Lingodbhava, Ravananugraha and Ugranarasimha.
