About

Centred around a gathering of great minds at the ancestral home of the High Kings of Leinster, Borris House, this festival has made its home in a small Irish village on the bank of the River Barrow. The Irish Times said of last year: "The Festival of Writing & Ideas...has pretty much knocked it out of the park in terms of small festival programming...a brilliantly eclectic line-up of speakers, Martin Amis, PJ Harvey, Ben Okri, Anne Enright, Dorothy Cross, Donal Ryan, Michael Craig Martin, Don McCullin, Neil Jordan, Paul Murray, and Liam Ó Maonlaí were among the speakers. The premise is simple, 50 speakers, half from overseas, half from Ireland, come to Borris Village and make a weekend of it, mingling with the crowds and giving formal and informal talks on their passions rather than doing a stint on publicity tour for their book or film. It might be a public interview, or a sermon in the Chapel, or a song in the local pub, or a discussion with a fellow writer or actor - with participation form the audience encouraged. The stunning Borris House throws open its doors and its parkland to the sunshine, and the village comes alive at dusk.
