His legacy as a master fiddle player extended far beyond his native south Sligo where his youth was spent listening to and absorbing traditional music. Following his move to America in 1914, Michael settled in New York where he made close to 80 recordings with major record companies. Today, Ceoláras Coleman is the regional resource centre for Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and services the Comhaltas network in Counties Sligo, Mayo and Roscommon, Leitrim and Fermanagh. The Comhaltas office contains a constantly growing archive, containing in excess of 16,000 original recordings and films which can be viewed by appointment. A visit to the Coleman Heritage Centre at Mountirwin is a must, it consists of a replica of the 1900s thatched cottage, the ancestral home of Michael Coleman.
