Woodham Park is a small, suburban, well-kept, English-style park, ten minutes' drive from the city centre, with a safe children's playground, large, fenced paddling pool and an aviary. Originally owned by G.H. Whitcombe, the founder of Whitcoulls (the well-known New Zealand book store chain), the property was obtained by the city council in 1942. Mature trees, lawns, herbaceous border areas and a small pavilion, make this a popular spot for wedding photography. The aviary contains exotic and indigenous birds, including quail, kakariki (parakeet), zebra finch and Java sparrow.
