Pegasus Arms

Central City

About

This tavern is the oldest remaining residential building existing within the four avenues, dating back to 1851. Originally a merchant's house, it was also home to Albion Wright's printers and later Pegasus Press, publishers of Janet Frame and ARD Fairburn, to name a few. Colonial decor and tartan carpet stand out in the bar areas and give the pub a cosy feel. The beer garden to the rear makes a nice place for a drink on a summer's evening and there is a permanent marquee, which is available for hire for private functions. A selection of New Zealand beers are available, bottled and on tap, together with a small but good quality wine list. The upstairs restaurant serves a variety of meals throughout the day.
