Sanchon

Jongno-gu Cuisines: Asian, Vegetarian

About

Fantastic, traditional temple fare in the charming courtyard of an old-fashioned house. At least a dozen different vegetarian banchan (side dishes) are available, including herbs, kimchi, roots, seaweed, and flatcakes. Dine on the early side if you want to avoid the expensive seating for the traditional folk music and dance performance. The menu changes according to what's in season and the dining room is cozy, with traditional wooden tables, exposed wood beams, and traditional Korean paintings lining the walls. There is also a second location in Goyang-gu with a more varied, slightly less expensive menu. Both are popular with tourists, so the staff all speaks English. Stop by Sanchon's cookie shop, Sanchon Saramdeul, on Insadong's main drag. They have a nice array of traditional Korean "cookies." Although some of them can be a bit pricey, most are relatively inexpensive at W4,000 to W5,000 ($4-$5/£2-£2.50) a bag.
