Urepel

3 Paseo de Salamanca Cuisines: Spanish

About

Urepel is near the mouth of the Urumea River, at the edge of the Old Town. Its interior isn't as elegant as those of the restaurants above, but fans of this place aren't bothered by that at all. They come for the food. The restaurant is the domain of Tero Almandoz, one of the outstanding chefs in the north of Spain. Deftly handled seafood dominates the menu and is often served with delicate sauces. The main courses are made even better by an emphasis on perfectly prepared vegetables. Rape, dorada (gilthead sea bream), and raviolis of cigalas (crayfish) are likely to turn up on the menu. You can also order goose or duck, somewhat rare in San Sebastián. A local food critic got so carried away by the dessert cart and its presentation that she claimed, "It would take Velázquez to arrange a pastry so artfully" -- an indication of how highly regarded this place is. We prefer it in the evening instead of at midday, when many of the tables are reserved by local businesspeople and government officials.
